4 Oct: Chelsea 2-0 Liverpool
It's Drog Again
Both teams came into the match with a purpose. Chelsea were boosted by Manchester United's draw against Sunderland. A win for the Blues would take them to the top of the table. Liverpool came into the match much criticised after losing to Fiorentina in midweek. Both teams had players in top form, with Didier Drogba scoring freely for Chelsea and Torres scoring 5 goals in 2 games. In a match which Chelsea dominated, Torres didn't have many chances and scuffed them when he had them. However, the top scorer in Chelsea was the opposite. He created the 2 goals that sunk Liverpool. He was magical in creating the second goal for Malouda and swept across a sweet left foot ball for Anelka for the first goal. Take no credit away from Anelka and Malouda. It wasn't an easy finish. Poor defending led to both goals and Rafa Benitez will again be looking at his defence's mistakes. Liverpool will next face Sunderland at the Stadium of Light and Benitez will be hoping his defenders learn from their mistakes or be punished by Darren Bent and Kenwyne Jones who both scored against Manchester United. Chelsea take on Aston Villa at Villa Park after the international break.
4 Oct: Arsenal 6-2 Blackburn Rovers
Fabulous Fab
A match full of positives and negatives. If not for the scoreline, it would be hard to say this was a good match. Blackburn were very poor defensively, giving Arsenal so much time and space. They were slow to cover and allowed Arsenal to have free shooting practice on Robinson. Sam Allardyce must be glad that Robinson was having one of his better days with some stunning saves. If not for Robinson, the scoreline would have been worse. He was really unlucky to have conceded 6 goals having put in such a good performance. If he had a better defence in front of him, Capello may have had a look at him. Arsenal made full use of Blackburn's torrid defending and thus scored 6 goals from 6 different playes. Just a few weeks ago, we were talking about Ryan Giggs creating 3 goals for Manchester United against Manchester City, but today, Fabregas exceeds that with his 4 assists and a goal against Blackburn. What a show by the Arsenal captain! Again, his combination with Arshavin and Van Persie was lethal. Blackburn were very unlucky not to be awarded a penalty for the foul on Dunn and that could have changed the game at 3-2 down. I'm sure Blackburn wouldn't have been trashed 6-2 if they have actually got that penalty (and scored it). Arsenal face Birmingham after the international break and it looks likely to be a goal galore again while Blackburn has got a chance to improve on their points tally welcoming Burnley to Ewood Park.

3 Oct: Manchester United 2-2 Sunderland
Highlights, Interviews and Analysis!
Ferdinand (Anton) Saves United
A very poor Manchester United performance. Even with pass master Paul Scholes, they were losing the ball all the time. How could a team like Manchester United give the ball away so easily at their home ground? They were very lucky to get an equaliser in the stoppage time when Anton Ferdinand diverted the ball into his own net. Sir Alex will be furious at the number of times his players gave the ball away cheaply and his patience with Ben Foster must be running out. The United stand-in keeper was even left out of Capello's England squad. If that doesn't wake him up, I wonder what will. Manchester United will next face Bolton at Old Trafford in a potential banana skin. Bolton scrapped a piece of Tottenham and will put up a tough fight. Sunderland to their credit, came to Old Trafford to attack. Steve Bruce was looking for his first win over Sir Alex and almost got it if not for Anton's boot. He must be brimming with confidence as his team next faces Liverpool. Maybe Anton did it for Rio.

3,4 & 5 Oct Preview: Bruce Re-United; Off-form Blues vs Battered Reds
Bolton Wanderers vs Tottenham Hotspur
Form: (L L W D W) (W W L L W)
Matt: A reinvigorated Bolton Wanderers face a Tottenham side still licking their lips after mauling Burnley last week. The Trotters have done well recently after picking up 7 out of 9 points in the last three games, albeit against teams that have been predicted to be involved in the relegation dogfight. Tottenham will be a totally different challenge. Spurs are Keane on building on last week's five-star show and Harry Houdini would expect a victory to establish his side in the top six. Harry's magical trio of Keane, Crouch and Defoe have already pulled eleven goals out of the hat between them; however, the latter is very doubtful for the game after suffering an injury to his hand last week. Bolton have yet to keep a clean sheet so far, so expect a high-scoring game with Spurs probably having enough quality to seal the win.
Prediction: 2-3
Burnley vs Birmingham City
Form: (W L L W L) (D L L W L)
Matt: The only reason why Burnley are in mid-table is the fact that they still remarkably have a 100% winning record at home. The stark difference in their home and away form is jaw-dropping. When Owen Coyle's side play at home, Turf Moor is transformed into a fortress where Black Cats and Devils have been felled, but outside the sanctity of their Turf they turn into meek little lambs ready for the slaughter. The Clarets have yet to score away and Brian Jensen, "the Beast", has pawed the ball out of his net 14 times already! Birmingham are surprisingly joint-second along with Man United and Chelsea in keeping goals out with only 6 goals allowed so far, but what use is that if you've only scored 4 goals? Brum admittedly do have a very tight, strong defence, not unlike the old Bolton, but it's like being armed with a titanium shield and a toothpick. The two teams have scored only 9 goals between them, so don't expect any fireworks. A long slog towards the final whistle I predict...
Prediction: 1-0
Hull City vs Wigan Athletic
Form: (W D L L L) (L L W L W)
Matt: Wigan turned the formbook on its head last week with an emphatic and utterly startling win over Chelsea so who knows what to expect this week? Hull City have been a disgrace in the past few games really; absolutely atrocious defending coupled with Phil Brown's bewildering managerial decisions have resulted in the tame Tigers shipping 19 goals - the worst in the league and deservedly so. The next chapter in the Hull Circus emerged today with the appointment of 35-year old Nick Barmby, who has four substitute appearances this season, as captain. With all due respect, Barmby is no Ryan Giggs. How does Brown expect a bench-warmer to lead his team on the pitch? Brown's probably still affected by the altitude sickness he caught when his team mounted the peak of the EPL table last year. Anyway, as I said earlier this week, if Wigan play with the same attitude as they did against Chelsea, they'll have no problem finishing up the table; and definitely no problem knocking the stuffing out of the Tigers.
Prediction: 0-2
Wolverhampton Wanderers vs Portsmouth
Form: (L D L W L) (L L L L L)
Matt: Wolves didn't deserve to lose to Sunderland that badly last week; in fact, their attacks were almost too fierce for the Black Cats to repel at times in a spirited display. Portsmouth, well, admittedly didn't warrant a loss either, but poor finishing and even worse luck cost them dear. How often is it that you see a team being applauded off the pitch after losing 7 straight games? Paul Hart's team can't be faulted for lack of effort but they are certainly due a badly-needed slice of luck soon, hopefully along with financial salvation. Sadly, Wolves' firepower appears too overwhelming for a Portsmouth side bereft of confidence and strong leadership. Given the circumstances, I'll pick Wolves to snatch a win, albeit reluctantly in view of Portsmouth's predicament.
Prediction: 2-1
Manchester United vs Sunderland
Form: (W W W W W) (W L W L W)
Matt: Steve Bruce brings his Sunderland side to Old Trafford with last week's almighty fright by Wolves still undoubtedly fresh in his mind. Wolves gave the Black Cats a real run for their money last week with their incessant, rapid attacks that Sunderland at times had no answer to. So you can imagine what will happen if United decide to go up to fifth gear in this match-up. Now, more on United. You have to stand up and applaud the tactical genius that is Sir Alex Ferguson. He has assembled his team in such a way that it is impossible to predict who will play in midfield and attack, thereby giving his opposite number no clue as to how to counter United. Whoever he chooses to play has been instilled with the same hunger, attacking impetus and burning desire that runs through his veins. United can be guaranteed more silverware under Ferguson's watch and it'll take an extraordinary manager to succeed the wily old Scot. Back to the matter of the match; United approach this home game full of confidence after their morale-boosting comeback win over Wolfsburg. With Ryan Giggs in possibly the best form of his career, an "omnipotent" attack as described by Alan Hansen and a reasonably mean defence, the Red juggernaught looks unstoppable. United to leave the Black Cats licking their wounds, but Sunderland to make a good fight of it first.
Fab: When Manchester United play Sunderland, we think Roy Keane. The former Red was a fantastic leader for both teams, captaining Manchester United to glory and guiding Sunderland to the world's most prestigious league. However, with Keane gone, Steve Bruce has kept Sunderland going strong in the EPL and they sit 8th in the table. Will he be able to stop the league leaders in their tracks?
Manchester United Team News
Sir Alex Ferguson's team come into this match after a midweek encounter with VFL Wolfsburg. United are still on a winning streak since losing to Burnley in August. They put 2 past a defensively tight Stoke last week and will look to put more past a recently porous Sunderland defence. Michael Owen picked up an injury in midweek and will sit out this match but Dimitar Berbatov has returned to form with a goal last week and a top class performance against Wolfsburg even though he didn't score. Giggs played the full 90 minutes in midweek, so he will likely be on the bench for this match while Paul Scholes will most probably start. Michael Carrick has signalled to Sir Alex that he's back in form and will want a place in the starting lineup. Nani looks likely to replace Giggs on the left as Park is out with a virus. He had a bad day against Stoke last week and will be looking to improve on that. Ben Foster should take his place back from Tomasz Kuzszack with Van Der Sar still out.
Sunderland Team News
Darren Bent, what an excellent signing by Steve Bruce! 6 goals in 7 games and a budding partnership with Kenwyne Jones, who himself has scored 4 goals for the club. Sunderland will look to their on-fire strike partnership of Bent and Jones to torture the Manchester United defence which was shaky against Stoke and Man City. Injury wise, Sunderland only have Lee Cattermole out. Steve Bruce will have a full team to choose from. It will likely be the same lineup that started against Wolves with the exception of Cattermole. Sunderland had a rest in midweek and will be fresh for the visit to Old Trafford.
The Match
This game has "high scoring" written all over it. A Sunderland defence that has conceded 5 goals in the last 2 matches face an in-form Berbatov and Rooney, and over on the other side, a shaky Ferdinand and Foster are up against Bent and Jones who have scored 10 goals between them. Definitely an exciting match at Old Trafford! Sir Alex will be moaning about not having that extra day rest having to play just 3 days after seeing off Wolfsburg while rivals Liverpool, Chelsea and Arsenal all play on Sunday. However, he will rally his troops and want to retain that top spot before the international break. Steve Bruce will be calling on his defence to wake up after conceding 5 in 2 games and they can ill afford anymore mistakes against United.
Key Players/Battles
Wayne Rooney vs Craig Gordon
The return of Craig Gordon wasn't enough to stop Sunderland from conceding 5 goals in the last 2 EPL matches. This time he is up against Wayne Rooney, who although has stopped scoring in recent matches, is still a top class striker and can create magic out of nothing. His energy and hustling will trouble the Sunderland defence. Looks like Wayne will get back to scoring form.
Winner: Wayne Rooney
Ben Foster vs Darren Bent
Ben Foster isn't a fans favourite after his terrible performance against Man City and everytime he plays, he instills fear not in his opponets, but in the hearts of United fans. He is no doubt a very good goalkeeper but he needs to maintain his consistency in order to keep goalscoring machine Darren Bent out. However, with Bent and Jones bound to be firing at Foster's goal, its hard to see him keeping out Bent.
Winner: Darren Bent
Dimitar Berbatov
The Bulgarian gave a great performance in midweek and if he can maintain that form, he will cause great trouble to the Sunderland defence. His vision, creativity and ball control is fantastic but he will need to improve on his finishing. Can the Bulgarian repay the faith that Sir Alex has placed in him after splashing 30+million for his signature?
Prediction: Matt: Manchester United 3-1 Sunderland
Fab: Manchester United 4-2 Sunderland
Chelsea vs Liverpool
Form: (W W W W L) (L W W W W)
Matt: Chelsea and Carlo Ancelotti are still reeling from their shocking defeat at Wigan last week as evident by the meek performance in midweek while Liverpool's supposed full recovery from their early season blip all went horribly wrong in Florence. Chelsea have been woefully out-of-sorts for their past two games, with this slide noticeably coinciding with Frank Lampard's loss of form. The Blues' midfield dynamo is a vital cog of Chelsea's engine and they dearly need him functioning at his very best again. Fortunately, they'll have the formidable Didier Drogba back to spearhead their attack for this game. Defensive-wise, Chelsea were made to look oh-so-ordinary at Wigan, with Carvalho exceptionally poor and slow. He must be having sleepless nights at the prospect of facing the pacy Fernando Torres on Sunday.
Liverpool don't look too good in defence as well - Jamie Carragher appears to be increasingly sluggish in his movement, something that comes with age which similarly plagues Carvalho. Glen Johnson and Emiliano Insua are more of attackers than defenders, thus making Liverpool look worringly unstable at the back. Benitez's zonal marking system compounds this problem as Liverpool look like conceding every time they face a set piece. In attack, despite his (fluke) goal last week Steven Gerrard looks nowhere near his best. I've said it before and I'll say it again: only the brilliance of Torres is keeping Liverpool up the table and winning games. Take him and Gerrard out and see what happens to Liverpool.
Creaking defences and potent attacks. This match is a recipe for goals galore and hopefully the neutrals get to watch a spectacle just as entertaining as the 4-4 draw that illuminated last year's Champions League. A draw ain't that bad for Man United as well.
Fab: The last match at Stamford Bridge saw Chelsea send Tottenham crashing home. This time, the Blues welcome the Merseyside Reds. Liverpool are on top form after stumbling in the first few matches while Chelsea are losing focus after their winning streak was ended by Wigan last week. While that doesn't seem too good for Chelsea, they are still unbeaten at Stamford Bridge and Liverpool have struggled all season away from home with narrow wins over West Ham and Bolton. Will Liverpool take something away from Stamford Bridge or will Chelsea rediscover their form? Sunday's Match of the Day!
Chelsea Team News
Deco returned in midweek for Chelsea while Michael Ballack and John Obi Mikel are doubtful. Alex continues to be sidelined. Ancelotti would surely have noticed Ivanovic's less than impressive performance against Apoel Nicosia. Jose Bosingwa, who was suspended in that game along with Didier Drogba, should replace Ivanovic at right back. Didier Drogba will be looking to continue his good goalscoring form after being rested (suspended) in midweek. He will be fresh and looking to torture a confidence-lacking Liverpool defence. However, Ancelotti will be worried about his defence. Petr Cech was sent off last week against Wigan and Henrique Hilario will replace him against Liverpool. Ancelotti must be sweating each time Liverpool attack! Someone prepare a towel for Carlo please!
Liverpool Team News
Has complacency creeped into Liverpool's players? After thumping Hull 6-1, they succumbed to a 2-0 defeat by Fiorentina in the Champions League. No doubt Liverpool will need to work on their defence after conceding goals from situations that defenders should have had covered. Stevan Jovetic and Mutu combined to beat Liverpool's offside trap and had their defenders looking like fools. Jovetic again wasn't closed down for the second goal, just like Geovanni's goal last week. Rafael Benitez will want his defenders to be focused against Hot Drog or they will surely pay the price. No matter how good Torres and Gerrard can combine up front, they still need to keep it tight at the back. After all, they are playing away, and Liverpool's away form hasn't been convincing. Wins by a 1 goal margin against West Ham and Bolton surely isn't what you expect from a Liverpool team that put 6 past Hull and 4 past Burnley. Good chance for Liverpool to improve and bounce back from their midweek disappointment with Hilario in goal. Can Carragher keep it tight at the back, and will Torres score yet another hat-trick? Wear red for luck if you believe in it, for Liverpool will need some.
The Match
The Italian Master vs the Spaniard Shuffler. Ancelotti will want to protect Chelsea's unbeaten home record after losing their perfect start to Wigan last week. Benitez will want an improvement from the Reds after losing to Fiorentina in midweek. Both teams need a win but only 1 team will get it. A point for either side doesn't seem enough so both sides will be out to get all 3 points. With both defences not at its best, and both going for the win, we could see an open match.
Key Players/Battles
Henrique Hilario vs Fernando Torres
Do we need a verdict on this? Do we even need to discuss this? Torres is on top form while Hilario has been warming the bench until last week when he came on to pick the ball out of his net twice. Hilario must be praying for a miracle!
Winner: Fernando Torres
Frank Lampard vs Steven Gerrard
Two of England's greatest talents. England managers have found it hard to play them in the same side. Seems like it's better to pair them against each other. Lamps has been dark in front of goal recently but has still been contributing a good deal of assists. Stevie is in good form even though he has only scored 1 goal (or fluke) in the last 4 matches. Who will rise to the occasion? Will Lamps light up or will the Liverpool captain show he's the better Englishman?
Winner: Hard to choose!
Didier Drogba vs Jamie Carragher
Caught sleeping by Stevan Jovetic, Carragher must be looking forward to make amends by shackling Drogba. Drogba, fresh and on fire, must already be tasting the goals and thinking about his celebrations. An on fire Drogba versus a sleeping Carragher. Don't think Carragher will wake up yet. Maybe after a Drogba baptism of fire.
Winner: Didier Drogba
Prediction: Fab: Chelsea 2-1 Liverpool
Matt: Chelsea 3-3 Liverpool
Arsenal vs Blackburn Rovers
Form: (W L L W W) (L D W L W)
Fab: Emirates welcome the resurgent Rovers. Blackburn bounced back from their defeat against Everton to impressively overcome Aston Villa 2-1 last week. Up against the Gunners, will they be gunned down? Or have they come wearing their bulletproof vests?
Arsenal Team News
The sight of Andrei Arshavin's back-flick goal against Olympiakos must have warmed the hearts of Arsenal fans. Arshavin is back and fully fit. They had to play 2 tough matches coming into this one, narrowly squeezing past Fulham and Olympiakos. How Arsenal fans must be rubbing their hands in delight at the sight of Paul Robinson. They had to break down a stubborn Mark Schwarzer and Antonis Nikopolidis but now they have Paul Robinson at their mercy. Robin Van Persie and Co. must love this. Nothing new on the injury front as Vito Mannone continues in goal for Arsenal. He has been fantastic so far and will surely fight Almunia for a starting place.
Blackburn Team News
Sam Allardyce brings his team to the Emirates this week after narrowly beating Aston Villa last week at Ewood Park. He must still be concerned at his team's roller-coaster form and will want to at least take a point home from the Emirates. His decision to drop Benni McCarthy in favour of Di Santo is a surprise after McCarthy's scoring comeback. Will he stick with Di Santo or will McCarthy get a chance to prove himself? Rovers have scored 6 goals in 6 games but Di Santo didn't even score 1. Allardyce continues his fortune with injury as only Gael Givet is out. Can he choose the right team to stop Arsene Wenger's boys?
The Match
The combination of Fabregas, Van Persie and Arshavin was wonderful against Olympiakos even though they failed to break down Nikopolidis until the 78th minute and subsequently a marginally offside goal by Arshavin. If these 3 can maintain their wonderful partnership, then there's no chance Paul Robinson and Co. can stop them. Sorry Rovers look set to be steamrolled by Arsenal's Three Musketeers.
Key Players/Battles
Robin Van Persie vs Paul Robinson
Not really a key battle actually. I don't see how Robinson is going to stop Van Persie. Definitely not if Van Persie plays like he did against Olympiakos. It's probably just a matter of how many times Robinson picks the ball out of his net.
Winner: Robin Van Persie
Bacary Sagna vs Morten Gamst Pedersen
Pedersen has always been seen as one of the stars of the Blackburn team. However, he has failed to live up to that name in recent times. A good performance against the Gunners could be a stepping stone to rebuilding his star status. Will he be able to overcome Bacary Sagna? Tough chance.
Winner: Leaning slightly towards Sagna, but hard to say really
Prediction: Arsenal 3-0 Blackburn
Everton vs Stoke City
Form: (L W L W W) (D W L D L)
Fab: Everton entertain Tony Pulis’ Stoke City this weekend at Goodison Park. Having started the season poorly, Everton seem to have pulled themselves together after stringing together 4 wins in the last 4 matches. In that 4 matches, they have scored 10 goals and conceded only 1. They may not have faced the toughest of opponents but it is definitely a confidence boost for Moyes’ team. Stoke City come into the match on the back on a defeat by Manchester United at the Britannia Stadium. After starting the season brightly, Stoke have not won in the last 3 Premier League games, with the last win coming over Sunderland in August (aside from the Carling Cup win over Blackpool). Stoke have 2 draws and 1 loss in the 3 away games they have played this season while Everton have 2 wins and 1 loss at home. Will Moyes be able to guide his injury-ravaged team past a defensively stout Stoke?
Everton Team News
Everton’s injury woes continue with Joseph Yobo and Steven Pienaar out. It is yet to be confirmed how long Yobo will be out but it doesn’t look good for Everton. Alongside Yobo and Pienaar on the treatment table are Phil Neville, Anichebe, Jagielka and Arteta with long term injuries. Jack Rodwell is doubtful too. Moyes must take heart from Everton’s performance in midweek, coming from behind to overcome BATE Borisov. Tony Hibbert gave a good performance in place of the injured Yobo and that should be good news for Everton. Louis Saha had a good rest over the week and should be fresh for this encounter with Stoke. If Everton are to overcome a stubborn Stoke, this man would have to be on form to break them down.
Stoke Team News
Tony Pulis will be urging his team to pick themselves up after losing to Manchester United last weekend. They now face an in-form Everton and will need to defend for their lives if they are to stop the likes of Louis Saha and Tim Cahill. Ricardo Fuller is nearing a return and could even earn a place on the bench but the other injury victims are still out.
The Match
David Moyes will want his team to register yet another win and make it 5 out of 5. Lying near the bottom of the table early last month, Everton have climbed back up the ladder and are now 9th. Only 1 point separates Everton from 12th placed Stoke. If Stoke win here, they will jump above Everton and sit in the top half of the table. Stingy Stoke have only conceded 9 goals in 7 games. Can they stop Everton from scoring and maybe get something from Goodison Park?
Key Players/Battles
Louis Saha
With so many players injured, Saha will need to rise up above all and continue his scoring form in order to propel Everton further up the table. All eyes will be on him.
Tim Cahill
Scored the winner in midweek and Everton will surely look to him when they attack. They must first create before they can score. Without Arteta, they will look to Cahill’s creativity.
Thomas Sorensen
The experienced goalkeeper must put in a top class performance and be on his guard all day against Everton if Stoke are to escape with something.
Prediction: Everton 1-1 Stoke City
West Ham United vs Fulham
Form: (L D L L L) (L L W L L)
Fab: Carlton Cole has scored 3 goals for the Hammers, but the Hammers remain 3rd from the bottom and still winless at home. They have also lost their last 4 matches with their only win of the season coming in the game against Wolves. Fulham are not that good either after losing the last 2 EPL games to Arsenal and Wolves. On the bright side, Roy Hodgson saw his team overcome FC Basel in midweek thanks to a Danny Murphy goal.
West Ham Team News
Not the best of seasons for a team that’s expected to be at least in mid-table. Gianfranco Zola must stir his team up and get them out of the relegation zone before he finds himself in the firing line of his bosses. Jack Collison and Matthew Upson are doubtful for the match while long term injury victims Dean Ashton and Boa Morte remain out. Zavon Hines lost his place to new Italian signing Alessandro Diamanti who has only scored 1 goal so far (a fluke penalty) and hasn’t impressed the Hammers’ fans. The Hammers depend too much on Carlton Cole. If the whole team begin to contribute more goals, there may still be hope for them.
Fulham Team News
Played well against Arsenal last week and definitely didn’t deserve to lose. Fulham would be really tired after having to work against FC Basel in midweek and now travel to Upton Park. Will they be lethargic against a fresh West Ham who didn’t have to play in midweek? Danny Murphy scored the winner in midweek and may just be the man to make the difference here if Fulham want to get away with something and avoid the relegation zone. With not much of an injury worry at the moment, Roy Hodgson will only worry about his players' fatigue, having to play away just 3 days after an UEFA cup game.
The Match
A must win game for both teams. If West Ham win, they will move out of the relegation zone and exchange places with Fulham. Fulham will not want to be in the relegation zone and surely fight West Ham for 3 points here. West Ham have been poor all season and they will want to register a first home win of the season. 0 points on home soil isn’t good news for Zola and a win will surely bring joy to the fans. Both teams have only scored 10 goals between them so don’t expect an exciting game. Who will win the “relegation zone” battle? Will the Cottagers be Hammered?
Prediction: West Ham United 0-0 Fulham
Aston Villa vs Manchester City
Form: (W W W W L) (W W W L W)
Fab: Martin O’Neill’s boys lost to a late David Dunn goal last week, breaking their perfect record away from home. They cannot afford to lose another game if they want to break into the Big Four. Manchester City won last week against a relegation-threatened West Ham with Carlos Tevez scoring a brace and refusing to celebrate. A cash-rich City have signalled their intentions to break into the Big Four with 5 wins and 1 loss (coming against city rivals United) and they now sit 5th in the Barclays Premier League table. Both teams are touted to break into the Big Four this season but who’s the better team? Free spending City or tight-stringed Villa?
Aston Villa Team News
Richard Dunne faces his former team for the first time ever since leaving the Eastlands. He will be out to prove Mark Hughes that it was a wrong decision to sell him. He has performed well in his 3 games in a Villa shirt and is looking like a first team regular now. His combination with Collins and Friedel is proving hard to break down having conceded only 5 goals in 6 games. Steve Sidwell and Luke Young are on the road to recovery and may even be awarded a place on the bench while Stewart Downing and Curtis Davies remain sidelined. Gabby Agbonlahor has been in rich form and the man will want to keep his scoring boots on. However, Villa have been too dependent on Agbonlahor and will need everyone else to contribute more goals, especially Ashley Young.
Manchester City Team News
The derby defeat never affected them as they went on to beat Fulham and West Ham United. Mark Hughes’ summer signings have proved to be really good ones with Carlos Tevez, Emmanuel Adebayor and Gareth Barry all scoring. The only worry for him will be defensive duo Kolo Toure and Joleon Lescott who have yet to gel with each other’s game. It almost sounds like the Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard problem in England’s midfield. Toure and Lescott are no doubt top defenders, but individual talent means nothing if they get in each other’s way all the time. Stephen Ireland and Vincent Kompany are doubtful while Onuoha, Robinho and Benjani are still out with long term injuries.
The Match
It will be a tough match at Villa Park with both teams seeking to break into the Big Four. This will be a great chance for Villa to play catch up as they still lie only 7th in the table. A win over Man City will take them above their opponents and put them one step closer to their dreams. If Lescott and Toure continue to fumble, Agbonlahor and Co. will have a good chance to test the rock solid Shay Given. They will have to beware on the other end as Man City have been potent in front of goal, scoring 14 goals in 6 games. Aston Villa have the best defensive record in the league and will want to show that it is no fluke with a clean sheet against free-scoring City. Both goalkeepers will be up for a busy day.
Key Players/Battles
Brad Friedel vs Carlos Tevez
The Duracell-battery operated Argentinean will be up against a solid Villa defence line led by the ever impressive Brad Friedel. Tevez put 2 past Robert Green last week, but can he even put one past Friedel? Not a chance.
Winner: Brad Friedel
Stephen Warnock vs Shaun Wright-Phillips
Wright-Phillips is a menace down the right flank. Even though he lost his England place to Aaron Lennon, he will want to prove to Fabio Capello that he is also a worthy contender for the right winger slot in Capello’s team. Up against 27 year old Warnock, can he torment his opponent and help his team to a victory?
Winner: Shaun Wright-Phillips
James Milner vs Nigel De Jong
Nigel De Jong is the destroyer in City’s midfield. His job will be to contain James Milner and control the midfield in the game. However, Milner will not just sit back and let De Jong control the game. Can Milner stamp his class on De Jong and render De Jong useless?
Winner: Hard to say. Leaning slightly towards De Jong though.
Ashley Young vs Pablo Zabaleta
Young hasn’t hit the form that saw him score 9 goals and create 10 last season. He has only scored 1 goal with no assists to his name yet. He will want to improve on that against Zabaleta. Zabaleta got his place back from Richards after Richards’ poor performance against Manchester United and he is out to prove to Hughes that he is the better right back. If he can shackle Young, Hughes will be doubly assured of his quality.
Winner: Ashley Young
Gabriel Agbonlahor vs Shay Given
The City custodian was unlucky to concede 4 goals against Manchester United after putting up a brave performance. He has conceded 2 goals in the last 2 matches and will hope to improve on that by keeping a clean sheet against Gabriel Agbonlahor. Agbonlahor has scored in every match since the start of the season and he will want to keep that record going for a 7th game. Will he be able to break down a stubborn Shay Given?
Winner: Too hard to say really. Let’s just watch the game.
Prediction: Aston Villa 0-0 Manchester City

City to flatten Hammers
Sorry about the Sunderland-Wolves preview... slipped my mind, but do watch the match highlights! It was a cracker of a match!
Manchester City vs West Ham United
Form: (WWWWL) (WLDLL)
Matt: Having lost to top-four opposition last week, both teams will want to rebound from disappointing setbacks. Both City and United lost by single goal margins, but the alarm bells will be ringing over the fact that they conceded seven goals between them. The similarities do not end there. The blue side of Manchester and the London Hammers both share same characteristics: potent and dynamic attacks coupled with shoddy, lacklustre defending. The only defining difference between the two sides would be the quality of the players. City have a whole dressing room brimming with quality attackers whereas West Ham, devoid of the Arab riches of City, can only boast the likes of academy graduate Zavon Hines and medusa-like Alessandro Diamanti. City could give a debut to new recruit Roque Santa Cruz today, allowing him to link up with Tevez and Bellamy in what would be a strikeforce to be feared. West Ham have a side with good spirit and determination, but against a City side with a point to prove after last week's collapse, they can only hope Lady Luck shines on their side.
Prediction: 3-1

26 Sept: Wigan Athletic 3-1 Chelsea
Highlights, Interviews and Analysis!
Wigan Shock Sorry Chelsea
After 5-0 and 4-0 losses to Manchester United and Arsenal, Wigan entertained a Chelsea squad on the back of six successive wins with everyone expecting the home side to suffer a hiding once again. But dear me no! Wigan Athletic gave the performance of their lives and pummelled an unusually poor Chelsea outfit looking like they had just woken up from their cash-filled beds. Chelsea were slow to respond to anything and everything Wigan threw at them and probably should have lost by a bigger margin if not for Petr Cech. Ancelotti must be grumbling Italian in his sleep after this dreadful display. Complacency setting in, signore?
Wigan Goal Analysis/Chelsea Incompetence
#Goal 1: Firstly, Chelsea were not prepared when Wigan took a quick corner. Secondly, Chelsea responded to it with two players SLOWLY jogging towards N'Zogbia to try and close him down. Thirdly, TWO Wigan players were left totally unmarked with one being former-buffoon Titus Bramble who headed home. Where was the urgency? Chelsea are reknowned for closing down opponents and pressurizing them into mistakes but these attributes were completely missing in this game.
#Goal 2: Nobody followed Hugo Rodallega as he breezed past a static Chelsea defence to latch onto N'zogbia's perfectly executed through ball. Horrendous marking. Cech, fearful for his head, came out legs-first and scythed the Colombian down. A rare error by Cech, but ultimately a costly one bearing in mind that a rampant Liverpool visit Stamford Bridge next week. Henrique Hilarious looks a pudgy and incapable joke of a keeper. Continue reading to find out why.
#Goal 3: Chelsea seemed to have given up defending by this point. Maynor Figueroa was allowed to skip through two Chelsea defenders but scuffed his cross. Hilario-us fell flat on his bottom as if hit in the gut by a cannonball when in reality he could've reached the ball had he stayed on his feet. Paul Scharner could not conceal his delight as he slid into the empty net with the ball.
Wigan Athletic Verdict: Full marks to Roberto Martinez for sticking with his attacking policies and stretching Chelsea by focussing on the wings. Credit to him for fostering such a strong spirit and sharpness in his team. Wigan thoroughly deserved this win as they were miles better than Chelsea in every department. A proud day for the club and their fans, and if they repeat this display week in week out, Wigan will finish in the top half of the table for sure. Great performance by the Latics.
Chelsea Verdict: An off day at the office is the most plausible excuse; critics will call it complacency at its finest. Worst possible time for this result, with Liverpool looming on the horizon. If Hugo Rodellega and Charles N'zogbia can cause so much trouble to the Chelsea backline, can you imagine what Fernando Torres and Steven Gerrard will do next week? The backline was creaking throughout the game, and one wonders if the Blues can cope through the transfer embargo with an aging defence. Petr Cech is a vital organ in the Chelsea body and Chelsea won't function as well without his assuring presence between the sticks. Rafael Benitez will be rubbing his hands in glee at the prospect of a plump Hilario-us in goal and with Torres in top form, it's easy to see why. It'll be interesting to see how Carlo Ancelotti responds to his first setback of the season.
Matt
Oh Bramble Oh Bramble! Who would have expected Bramble to score against Chelsea? The most unlikely person to score powered a header from N'Zogbia's cross into the bottom corner of the net. What a game for Wigan! Coming off a 4-0 defeat by Arsenal last week, they had to play league leaders (before the game) Chelsea. But Roberto Martinez never changed his tactics, even though it has failed twice before. He stuck to his principles and this time, Wigan reaped the rewards. The sending off of Petr Cech and injury to Ashley Cole left Chelsea with 9 men on the field. That definitely helped Wigan but they had performed well through the whole game and deserved the win. On the other hand, Chelsea were very poor defensively. If Chelsea want to fight for the championship, they cannot defend like they did against Wigan. Poor marking and slow to react. Ancelotti will be looking to work on Chelsea's defence before they face a goal-happy Liverpool next week.

26 Sept: Tottenham Hotspur 5-0 Burnley
Highlights, Interviews and Analysis!
Four-star Keane Runs Riot
A flop at Liverpool, Robbie Keane moved back to Tottenham under Harry Redknapp and was made captain. Today, we see why Redknapp brought him back to White Hart Lane. What a sensational game! 4 goals for Robbie! He was clinical in his finishing and almost added a 5th if he had legs as long as Crouch's. Burnley were poor defensively and probably defended too high up. When you have the speedy Lennon and Defoe running at you, you have to adapt tactically and not defend too high up. But Burnley sat high up the pitch and were often caught chasing shadows of the likes of Lennon. Tottenham, even with their defensive worries, managed to keep a clean sheet (though almost conceding one due to Cudicini's error) and that must've been a relief to Harry Redknapp. Attack is probably the best form of defence for Tottenham. Burnley will need to improve on their away form and get tighten their defence. Brian Jensen has been doing well for them and was unlucky to be picking the ball out of his net 5 times. Have Tottenham rediscovered their early form after losing to both Manchester United and Chelsea? Only time will tell.

26 Sept: Stoke City 0-2 Manchester United
Highlights, Interviews and Analysis!
Stoke undone by Welsh Wizard
Nobody goes to Stoke's Britannia Stadium and expects an entertaining game and this was no exception. United had to work hard in a gritty game but they eventually managed to grind out the three points their efforts thoroughly deserved. United had knocked on the door for most of the game till then and Sir Alex finally produced the key to ensure that their hardworking display was rewarded. And guess who was the key? Veteran Ryan Giggs stepped off the bench in the 55th minute to replace the appalling Nani and promptly unlocked the Stoke defence with two assists.
Portuguese Pretender vs Welsh Master
It was said that Nani had to step up this season to partly fill the huge void that Ronaldo had left when he flew off to Madrid, but if this game was anything to go by, Nani is clearly not the answer. He was absolutely abysmal; horrific shooting coupled with exasperatingly poor decision-making must've compelled Sir Alex to cough out his chewing gum in disgust, I suspect. You could see the difference the moment Giggs stepped onto the pitch: United now had the cutting edge. The Welsh genius displayed all his skill and experience and he only needed one touch: the killer first-time pass timed to perfection that nutmegged the last defender in the way between him and Berbatov which left the Bulgarian with the simplest of tasks to tap into an empty net. Giggs is also light years ahead of Nani in terms of set piece delivery. You can feel the heightened sense of expectation in the atmosphere when Giggs takes a corner or free-kick compared to anyone else in the team. Just look at United's second goal. Nani has a long way to go to match up Giggs' quality, class and utter brilliance.
Stoke City Verdict: Pretty same gameplan again as they have had for every game: reliance on their "excellence" in set-plays. Tony Pulis should be furious that it failed them today as shown by United's second goal. But with the system he has in place, Stoke should have no problem finishing in mid-table. It's not every week that he faces champion-material teams. Delap had a horrid throwing day though. With Ricardo Fuller soon to return, Stoke can only get better.
Manchester United Verdict: You can't play superbly every single week, and you definitely can't do it at Stoke by the way they play, but United duly delivered what Sir Alex expected of them in a gritty, hardworking display: three precious points. How precious? United are now top of the table thanks to Chelsea's astoundingly incompetent performance at Wigan. Another day, another masterclass by Giggs but Fergie must be worried over the really disappointing performances of Nani and Valencia. Next up: a reunion with old boy Steve Bruce.
Matt
What more can we say about Giggs? Star of the derby last week, super-sub this week. Coming on in the 56th minute for the ineffective Nani, he latched on to a precise through ball from Fletcher and slid the ball straight into the path of Dimitar Berbatov. There was never going to be an easier chance for the misfiring Bulgarian. With Manchester United coming up against a tough and rough Stoke City, it was always looking like Stoke's game plan would succeed. However, Sir Alex's introduction of Giggs changed the game. Now, United were in control. 2 assists in this game, 3 assists in the last game, that makes 5 assists in 2 games for the veteran winger. Stoke did well, but just not a match for the champions.

26 Sept: Liverpool 6-1 Hull City
Highlights, Interviews and Analysis!
Torres and Co. sink Hull
A Fernando Torres hattrick, a Steven Gerrard special (or mishit?) and a Ryan Babel brace condemned Hull to a 6-1 trashing. Fernando Torres scored a magnificent hat-trick. All 3 goals were taken with such calm and composure, coupled with precise finishing. What a quality player! Definitely in contention for World Player of the Year if he can maintain his form. Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, watch your backs, here comes Fernando Torres. Hull need to work a lot on their defence if they are to earn points to pull them up the table. Liverpool look shaky defensively and will need to improve on that before the meeting with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge next week. Geovanni is no Drogba. If Geovanni can score 1, what more Drogba?

26 Sept Preview: Hull to Sink, Wigan to be Steamrolled (again)
Portsmouth vs Everton
Form: (LLLLL) (LLWLW)
Fab: A Portsmouth team rooted to the bottom of the table versus a resurgent Everton team. Both teams will be looking to improve on their form after a poor start to the season. Portsmouth may be back on their feet after beating Carlisle in the Carling Cup match. After trashing Blackburn 3-0 last week and Hull 4-0 in midweek, Everton will be full of confidence and looking to build on that.
Portsmouth Team News
Paul Hart can finally breathe easier after seeing Portsmouth through to the next round of the Carling Cup. He will now have to focus back on getting points in the EPL. Portsmouth are still rooted to the bottom and if he cannot get Portsmouth up the table, he will soon find himself in the firing line. Danny Webber is pushing for a starting berth after scoring in midweek but Hart should be keeping faith in Piquionne. He will need Piquionne to start scoring goals and David James to keep out Louis Saha and Co.
Everton Team News
After a poor start to the season, Moyes has revitalized his boys: mustering 7 goals and not conceding in the last 2 matches. He will be looking to condemn Portsmouth to the bottom of table and bring Everton further up. No new injury concerns for Everton with only long term injury victims Phil Neville, Victor Anichebe, Phil Jagielka and Mikel Arteta out. Loius Saha will keep his place in the starting lineup after scoring a brace last week, keeping Jo on the bench. Moyes will be looking for Saha and Cahill to spur the team on to yet another win.
The Match
Both teams need to win. Portsmouth was heavily depleted in the summer while Everton have also lost Joleon Lescott to Man City. Struggling early in the season, both teams will be looking to climb back up the ladder. However, Everton look more likely to ascend after picking up two big wins while Portsmouth are still on a losing streak in the EPL. A Carling Cup win over Carlisle may have given a glimmer of hope to the fans, but not enough to beat Everton.
Key Battles
David James vs Loius Saha
England's number one (or former) will be hoping to keep out a fired-up Saha. If he can keep out Saha and Co., it will be a great help to Portsmouth trying to earn their first point. But with a shaky defence in front of him, he is going to need all his years of experience to keep out Saha.
Winner: Louis Saha
Frederic Piquionne vs Joseph Yobo/Sylvain Distin
Yet to score a goal this season, fans are wondering if Piquionne should be dropped. Up against Joseph Yobo and Sylvain Distin, I don't see how Piquionne would be breaking that dry spell, especially after Everton have kept two clean sheets in their last two matches.
Winner: Joseph Yobo/Sylvain Distin
Prediction: Portsmouth 0-3 Everton
Blackburn Rovers vs Aston Villa
Form: (LLDWL) (LWWWW)
Fab: Tied on 4 points with 3 other teams, Blackburn will be looking to secure a victory here and pull themselves out of the relegation zone. Visiting Ewood Park this week is Martin O'Neill's Aston Villa. Tied on 12 points at the top half of the table with 3 other teams, Aston Villa will be hoping they can continue their good form and push into the Big 4 this season.
Blackburn Team News
Having progressed into the next round of the Carling Cup after a narrow win over Nottingham Forest, Blackburn will be focusing on their EPL battle again. After being trashed 3-0 by Everton last week, Blackburn will want to build on their Carling Cup win and inflict a second loss of the season on Aston Villa. With almost a full squad to choose from, Big Sam will be making changes from the side that lost to Everton last week. Benni McCarthy made a scoring return from injury against Forest and looks good to return against Villa.
Aston Villa Team News
Martin O'Neill will have injuries to deal with coming into this match. Steve Sidwell and Luke Young are still out along with long term injury victims Curtis Davies and new signing Stewart Downing. However, Ashley Young and Emile Heskey should return. With Gabriel Agbonlahor finding his scoring boots in recent matches, he should retain his place upfront while Heskey and Carew fight it out for a place alongside him. Brad Freidel, Stephen Warnock and Richard Dunne should return after being rested for the midweek Carling Cup match.
The Match
Blackburn have only scored 3 goals at home this season while Villa have only conceded 1 goal away. With a mean looking Villa defence of Dunne, Collins and Friedel, Blackburn don't look like improving their goal tally. Boosted by the return of Young and Heskey, Aston Villa will fancy 3 points against Blackburn at Ewood Park.
Key Battles
Benni McCarthy vs Brad Friedel
Benni McCarthy made a scoring return in midweek and will want to add to that here. Brad Friedel will be looking to add to his clean sheet tally having kept out Portsmouth, Birmingham and Fulham in the last 3 matches.
Winner: Brad Friedel
Paul Robinson vs Gabriel Agbonlahor
Gabriel Agbonlahor is a on a scoring spree while Paul Robinson just leaked 3 goals against Everton last week. Former England goalkeeper vs Under-21 England star, the old head will have a tough job on his hands.
Winner: Gabriel Agbonlahor
Prediction: Blackburn 0-2 Aston Villa
Tottenham Hotspur vs Burnley
Form: (WWWLL) (WWLLW)
Fab: Tottenham tried to put up a fight against Manchester United and Chelsea, but found themselves getting trashed. Harry Redknapp isn't someone who lets two defeats against the Big Two affect him. Tottenham will look to put those defeats behind them and build on the good form that they had at the start of the season before the Big Two. Burnley started the season really well, beating Manchester United and Everton. After taking 3 points against Sunderland last week, they visit White Hart Lane in search of another good result.
Tottenham Team News
Spurs are in deep trouble in defence with key defenders out injured. Ledley King and Sebastien Bassong were injured in last week's battle at the Bridge while Woodgate is still out. Good news though that Dawson and Bale came through the midweek game unscathed. Vedran Corluka should start this game in the middle of defence alongside Dawson with Bale fighting Assou-Ekotto for a starting berth on the left. Jermaine Jenas has impressed in recent games and may keep his place depending on who plays up front. Crouch scored a hat-trick in midweek while Jermaine Defoe and Robbie Keane also got on the scoresheet. If Harry decides to play all 3 of them, Jenas could be dropped to the bench. Harry's got a tough decision to make here.
Burnley Team News
After beating Sunderland last week, Burnley fell to Barnsley in the Carling Cup match. More bad news for Burnley as Martin Paterson will be out for 3 months. David Nugent scored a brace against Sunderland last week and look set to be taking Paterson's place. However, with Burnley playing away, a defensive option may be employed.
The Match
Tottenham have gotten back to their feet with a win over Preston after two successive defeats to the giants. Jermaine Defoe is on fire and continues his scoring spree. His contribution will be vital in this match as Tottenham look to break into the Big 4. Burnley will not be looking at escaping with more than a point here. Trying to be adventurous may prove disastrous for them.
Key Battles
Jermaine Defoe & Peter Crouch vs Brian Jensen
Jensen has kept out many top strikers this season, including the likes of Wayne Rooney and Michael Owen but he will find it tough against a hot Jermaine Defoe and Peter Crouch who scored a hat-trick in midweek. Tough battle here but Defoe and Crouch should win it with home advantage.
Winners: Jermaine Defoe & Peter Crouch
Prediction: Tottenham 3-0 Burnley
Wigan Athletic vs Chelsea
Form: (LLLWL) (WWWWW)
Wigan face league leaders Chelsea at the DW Stadium after being crushed 4-0 by Arsenal last week at the Emirates. Roberto Martinez's team have not started the season well with only 2 wins and 4 losses. It is worth noting that they have conceded 12 goals (2nd highest number of goals conceded) while Chelsea have scored 15 goals (3rd highest number of goals scored). Having not played in midweek, they would be fresher than Chelsea who had to play QPR in the Carling Cup, although Chelsea had most of their key players rested in the Carling Cup game.
Wigan Team News
Wigan come into the game with almost a full strength team with only Oliver Kapo out. Even with a full squad to choose from, Roberto Martinez's attacking tactics would not do any favours to Wigan against a Chelsea team that has scored 15 goals this season. If he continues to hold on to his attacking style, he must hope Titus Bramble plays like John Terry and Chris Kirkland stops everything that comes at him. Sadly, that doesn't seem like happening.
Chelsea Team News
Chelsea welcome back Joe Cole and Yuri Zhirkov from injury. Joe Cole made a winning return against QPR in midweek along with Russian international Yuri Zhirkov. With Ancelotti making wholesale changes to the squad that faced Tottenham in midweek, he'll have all his first team players fit and refreshed against Wigan. Didier Drogba should be back after suffering from cramps last week while Deco and Alex are still out. Ancelotti will be looking to keep Chelsea's place at the top of the table with a win over the Latics.
The Match
It looks like a sure win for a Chelsea side who have won all their games this season, sitting comfortably at the top of the table. After sweeping Tottenham aside last week, Chelsea should walk right over Martinez's Wigan. I can't see how Wigan can stop the Chelsea train at this moment.
Key Battles
Hugo Rodallega vs John Terry and Co.
Rodallega has been a good signing for Wigan, contributing 2 goals so far and proving to be a real threat at times. But up against the mighty Terry and Co, he will have to pray they have an off day to have a chance to score.
Winner: John Terry and Co.
Chris Kirkland vs Didier Drogba
Forget Titus Bramble. There's no way he's going to stop Drogba. With Drogba in hot form, Kirkland is going to need hot gloves to keep the Ivory Coast international from burning his net. Kirkland is a good keeper but he needs his defence to stay focused.
Winner: Drogba based on form
Prediction: Wigan 1-4 Chelsea
Stoke City vs Manchester United
Form: (LDWLD) (LWWWW)
Matt: Stoke are very strong and hard to break down at the Britannia Stadium. Their home crowd are really vocal in their support which gives their players extra motivation to perform better. United will need to be at their best against the Stoke giants, but if they manage to get the first goal, a win for the champions would be most probable as Stoke would have to open up and attack which plays right into United's hands. Hopefully Wayne Rooney can continue his goal spree and Rory Delap injures his arm(s) in the warm-up!
Fab: Mid-table Stoke take on in-form Manchester United at the Britannia Stadium in the 7th game of the season. So far so good for Stoke with 2 wins, 2 draws and 2 losses. Tony Pulis has transformed them from relegation battlers to mid-tablers now. Manchester United's habit of falling over against smaller teams may boost the confidence of Stoke players. Stoke come into the game on the back of a 1-1 draw against Bolton and a narrow 4-3 win over Blackpool in the Carling Cup. Manchester United also scrapped through their last two games, winning the dramatic derby last weekend and squeezing past Wolves in the Carling Cup.
Stoke Team News
Tony Pulis has got injury worries on his hand with James Beattie and Ricardo Fuller both doubtful for tomorrow's game. However, he can still call on the likes of Dave Kitson and summer capture Tuncay Sanil. Mamady Sidibe and Abdoulaye Faye are still out with long term injuries. Stoke will likely be trying to contain the United strike force and wait for a chance to counter-attack. Tuncay Sanli will be key to Stoke's attacking game while Thomas Sorensen will have to call on his experience to keep out hotshot Wayne Rooney.
Manchester United Team News
Sir Alex has got no new injury concerns with only long term injury victims Obertan, Rafael, Hargreaves and Van Der Sar out. Ferdinand came through last week's derby without a reoccurrence of his injury so that should be good news for the United defence (not considering Rio's poor display at the end of last week's game). Michael Owen will be pestering Sir Alex for a starting place ahead of Dimitar Berbatov after scoring last week's winner. However, Michael Carrick continues to be out of the manager's plans and the return of Paul Scholes from suspension will probably put Carrick on the bench again. Ryan Giggs turned in a marvellous performance last week but may be rested with Sir Alex casting an eye on the midweek Champions League game against visiting Wolfsburg.
The Match
Going by individual talents, there is no doubt Manchester United outclass Stoke man-for-man. However, United were slipshod defensively against City last week with Ben Foster and Rio Ferdinand exceptionally poor. If they do not wake up from their slumber, Tuncay Sanli and Co. would surely be pouncing on their mistakes. If United can keep it good defensively, then it will be left to Wayne Rooney and Co. to try and break down a resilient Stoke rearguard.
Key Battles
Thomas Sorensen vs Wayne Rooney
The Manchester United hotshot if on fire now with 6 goals in 6 games. There is no doubt that he will warm Sorensen's hands but it's up to Sorensen to keep those shots out of his net. Doesn't look like happening though.
Winner: Wayne Rooney
Tuncay Sanli vs Rio Ferdinand
The former Middlesborough striker has been a real threat to United in recent years and is a big game performer. Up against an erratic Rio Ferdinand who has just returned from injury, he must be fancying his chances. Don't bet on him not scoring.
Winner: Tuncay Sanli
Prediction: Fab: Stoke City 1-1 Manchester United
Matt: Stoke City 0-2 Manchester United
Birmingham City vs Bolton Wanderers
Form: (WDLLW) (LLLWD)
Matt: Birmingham have had an impressive start to the season and the plaudits must surely go to their defence. They have never lost by more than one goal, but on the flipside, they've never won by more than one goal either. The previous sentence can also be applied to the visitors; however, Bolton have conceded in every of their games this season, while Birmingham have chalked up three clean sheets. With two defensive-minded teams and blunt attacks, don't expect too much from this game. I recommend watching any of the other 5 ongoing games or doing something more interesting like reading the newspaper, counting your money or sleeping. Or watching grass grow. Anything.
Prediction: 1-0
Liverpool vs Hull City
Form: (WLWWW) (LWDLL)
Matt: Liverpool seem to have recovered from their early season woes, but their problems have yet to be ironed out. Benitez's persistence in zonal marking for set pieces have resulted in goals being conceded by the bucketload: 9 goals in 6 games. Not to mention aging Jamie "tortoise" Carragher's increasing sluggishness. Only the brilliance of Torres and the industry of Gerrard have saved Liverpool so far from mid-table mediocrity. Fortunately for the Reds, the toothless Tigers from Hull are unlikely to pose any threat at fortress Anfield. Hull's dismal form has continued into the new season, and they certainly look favourites for the drop. I foresee a possible hat-trick for a Red and Hull to get punctured, blown away and sunk.
Prediction: 5-0
Fulham vs Arsenal
Form: (WLLWL) (WWLLW)
Matt: Both teams have had inconsistent starts to their seasons, with neither looking favourites for the win in this clash. Fulham won the corresponding fixture here 1-0 last season, so Arsenal will want to show that they have improved since then by exacting revenge. Fulham have the home crowd and advantage and are known to be very strong at home especially with defensive pillar Brede Hangeland holding the backline together. Quality-wise, Arsenal definitely come out tops when comparing the teams man-for-man. The question is: Have Wenger's baby boys come of age yet? The Gunners dropped many points against similar opposition last season. Arsenal only know how to play one style of football, albeit a very entertaining one, and if they score first they usually have no difficulty finishing teams off. The problem arises when they concede first, after which they tend to struggle to get back in the game. Fulham will provide this young squad with a stern test both physically and mentally.
Prediction: 1-1
